Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center
Location: Rochester, MN
Partnerships: BWBR Architects
Phase I of the Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center was built to serve Mayo's 28,000 employees and their families. The 110,000 SF, three-level fitness center includes a mezzanine running track, aerobics and strength training rooms, and meeting and conference facilities. A lap-pool, warm-therapy pool, and two whirlpools provide numerous aquatic options. The comprehensive wellness and fitness facility opened in August 2007.
An under-floor air distribution system helps maintain excellent air quality on the pool enclosure. A separate air handling unit was designed strictly for the pool enclosure to keep that area under negative pressure so that air is drawn into it, preventing chlorine odors from escaping into adjacent spaces. In considering patron comfort and health, the goal was to minimize chlorine odors.
Phase II is a four-floor expansion that provides a world-class health and wellness experience for Mayo patients. This vertical addition houses a 24,000 square foot sports medicine center for rehabilitation, performance analysis, and nutrition guidance. Other programs include massage, yoga, meditation and acupuncture. A commercial instruction kitchen helps demonstrate healthy cooking. Patrons can connect with nature at the indoor/outdoor rooftop garden, which features a 60-foot long living green wall.
